LONGEVITY & GROWTH

Engage and educate stakeholders, such as pavement owners, policy makers, and highway
and road users, to advance asphalt as the pavement of choice for mobility solutions.

REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

At our 2022 Annual Meeting in January, Richard Willis took the stage to unveil the industry’s vision for net zero carbon emissions, set forth in The Road Forward by the member-driven Climate Stewardship Task Force. NAPA Chairman Jim Mitchell and NAPA staff took to the road, the internet, and the phone to speak with members, SAPAs, and decision makers about the vision and how the industry would begin to take action. Support for The Road Forward grew, and two dozen member companies signed on, providing financial support for the research and projects taking shape. The Road Forward will continue for years to come as we strive to reduce asphalt’s carbon footprint, meet environmental targets that agencies are now seeking, and continue serving communities as the sustainable pavement of choice.

The Road Forward with us.”

MAKING SENSE (AND CENTS) OF CLIMATE STEWARDSHIP

We educated industry stakeholders on the
necessary investments to achieve net zero
carbon emissions and the work that lies ahead
in 8 webinars (with more to come in 2023).

“If your company is interested in actively addressing climate change, that appeals to young adults, so they are more likely to want to work with your company.”

PAVE IT BLACK

All 11 episodes of Pave It Black Season 5
(our flagship podcast) centered on
environmental topics with people throughout
the industry and stakeholder agencies.

“If we can lower temperatures, reduce fuel consumption, and streamline processes, we can reduce GHG emissions, all while saving money—and increasing profit.”

Ben Bowers, Auburn University

NAPA hosted 2 meetings to engage members on
carbon emission reduction strategies

We were off to a running start, releasing the following research and guidance to support industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

In a significant first, NAPA published a nationwide greenhouse gas emissions inventory, finding that asphalt mix production accounts for just 0.3% of industrial emissions in the United States.

To help members get started
right away, NAPA assembled
an assortment of readily
 implementable technologies,
 presented in a webinar on
 “low-hanging fruit.”

The Plant Operations
Subcommittee published best
practices on efficient trucking.

Because peer-to-peer
knowledge is irreplaceable,
 we launched a series of
Operational Tips, beginning
 with the benefits of paving
 under stockpiles.

Our library of resilience case
studies continued to grow,
with additions on thermal
cracking and flexible

Partners Make The Road Forward Possible

At The Road Forward launch, we called for the commitment of the entire industry and
asked members to commit to our shared journey. 24 Funding Partners answered the
call in year one, helping to fund the work that will move the entire industry forward. We extend deep gratitude for their investment of resources and expertise in helping to
shape The Road Forward. Annual partnerships will continue to be offered; look for the
next opportunity after the 2023 Annual Meeting, where year one partners will gather to
discuss next steps in climate partnership.

The Perpetual Pavement Awards
The Perpetual Pavement Awards (PPAs) recognize long-lasting roads built with a deep-strength asphalt pavement that can resist structural fatigue distress for at least 50 years. The 2021 PPAs recognized winners in three categories.

Pavement Economics Committee
Convened in 2012, the PEC develops scientific research projects and analysis that position asphalt as the pavement material of choice, works to strengthen legislative grassroots activities and insulate the industry from harmful legislation at state and national levels, and provides technical knowledge and scientific reports to the industry’s communications and deployment programs.
