EPDs IN FOCUS

Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are not new, but those letters have likely never been spoken more often than in 2022! Anticipating the rise of EPDs, NAPA invested in developing our Emerald Eco-Label software for asphalt EPDs more than five years ago. This year, the product category rules (PCR) received a required five-year update, and we launched Emerald Eco-Label version 2 with Optimizer functionality.

“We found a way to be more efficient with our gas use, which allows us to reduce pollutants and operate in a more economical manner.” Joshua Oliver, Brannan Companies

2022 saw the enactment of new EPD policies and requirements, from the state of Oregon, GSA, and USDOT. Additionally, FHWA held an Industry Listening Session on EPDs, where NAPA provided input to inform FHWA’s policy recommendations and activities.

HELPING MEMBERS MANAGE ENERGY CONSUMPTION

In September, NAPA became an ENERGY STAR® partner to encourage NAPA members to reduce energy consumption and costs at plants by using proven energy-saving technologies and practices.

PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY

NAPA presented at both in-person meetings of FHWA’s Sustainable Pavements Technical Working Group (SPTWG), helping to develop the roadmap for the next five years of the SPTWG program.

In Every Day Counts (EDC), FHWA works with state DOTs, local governments, tribes, private industry, and stakeholders like NAPA to identify new innovations that merit accelerated deployment. Each cycle runs for two years. In the current cycle, EDC6, efforts included e-ticketing and targeted overlays. In preparation for EDC7, NAPA provided an overview of EPDs.
